During
1942/43 RAF Thruxton was used by many different squadrons.
In January 1942, 12 Whitley bombers landed in preparation
for the now famous Bruneval raid which took place on
the 27/28 February 1942. On 22 June 1942 Blenheims of
No 2 Squadron arrived. The Americans arrived in 1944
with their P-47 Thunderbolts under the command of Colonel
Dyke F Meyer.
Civilian flight training started at Thruxton
in 1947 when the airfield was taken over by The Wiltshire
School of Flying until 1967. Western Air then took
over the operation of the airfield. Today both aeroplane
and helicopter training and hire take place at Thruxton.
With a number of Private aircraft based here a vibrant
GA community co-exists with both the Commercial and
Private Training.
