Instructor and Commercial Pilot Training at Thruxton Airport

Ministry of Defence – ELCAS Approved

Western Air has now added Instructor and Commercial Pilot Training to its already comprehensive flight instruction.
Head of Flight Training is David Scouller a well known figure in the industry. He spent 35 years in the RAF in front line squadrons, test flying and instructing and has held a professional licence for over 40 years. Since 1992 he has been conducting PPL, CPL, IR and Flight Instructor Training. Thruxton is an ideal location with unrestricted airspace, without lengthly delays and other restrictions that are inevitable when using major airports. Nevertheless the modular CPL flight training course will include operation from a major airport.

Flight Instructor Courses

Instructor Courses available are:

• Flight Instructor (Restricted) – the initial FI course
• Instrument Instructor
• Class Rating Instructor both single and multi-engine
• Aerobatic Instructor
• Night Flying Instructor
• Flight Instructor Tutor (FIC)

Thruxton airfield close to the Hampshire/Wiltshire border has views over the local chalk downs. Andover is only 4 miles away and there are a number of B&B’s close by.

In between flying sorties and ground studies, the restaurant is available for relaxation and you may well be tempted to try our home cooked lunches and snacks which are all reasonably priced.

Flight Instructor (Restricted) Rating FI(R)

The holder of an FI(R) Rating may give flight instruction to students training for a PPL, although there are certain restrictions regarding the authorisation of solo flight and cross country flying. These restrictions are removed when the full Flight Instructors rating is gained.
